The Global Fund for Children Wins Inaugural MacArthur Competition for Digital Learning

304 Grassroots Children's Organizations in 65 Countries to Share Knowledge

The Global Fund for Children (GFC) has been selected as one of 17 winners of the first-ever Digital Media and Learning Competition, funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and administered by HASTAC (the Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory). Selected from a pool of 1,010 applications by a panel of distinguished judges, the winning projects are expected to produce promising innovations in the use of digital media for learning.

The Global Fund for Children's project, "Networking Grassroots Knowlege Globally," aims to strengthen the organization's capacity to capture, share, and promote the knowledge and best practices gained by GFC's 304 innovative grassroots partners around the world. This knowledge will be shared in digital reports from GFC's upcoming Knowledge Exchanges for its grantee partners in India, Africa, and Latin America. The digital reports will include blogs, video blogs, audio slide shows, audio/video podcasts, and photographs and will be shared on GFC's website. Maya Ajmera, GFC's founder and president, stated today, "Our most valuable asset as an organization is the local knowledge of our grantee partners. No one has the knowledge base we've accumulated over the last decade, and we are so thrilled to have this opportunity to share it with all of our organizations and other children's advocacy groups."

This was the first Digital Media and Learning Competition held by the MacArthur Foundation. According to Jonathan Fanton, president of the MacArthur Foundation, "An open competition was an excellent way to inspire new ideas and collaborations. The amazing number of applications we received speaks volumes about the untapped potential in the field of digital media and learning. The winners represent the best thinking from many disciplines and professions working to harness the power of the web for learning."
